Citation Needed – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes Pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Lewis O. Aikey, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 461st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion (Automatic Weapons), in action in March 1944. On that date, Private Aikey’s battalion was assigned to protect a bridge built by the Army over the Sauer River between Luxembourg and Germany. When a German counterattack forced the forward American troops to withdraw back into Luxembourg, guarding the bridge became paramount. Private First Class Aikey and Private James M. Filson, assigned to defend the bridge, were mortally wounded and their half-track destroyed by enemy fire.

SS Paul Hamilton

On April 2, 1944 the SS Paul Hamilton (Libertyship) left as part of a Convoy and carrying Supplies and Men from the 485th Bomber Group to Italy, but on April 20, 1944 the Convoy was attacked by the German off the Algerian Coast, the SS Paul Hamilton was struck by a Aerial Torpedo and blew up, off the 580 Men only 1 survived.

They are remembered at the Wall of Missing at Carthage Cemetery.

The SS Paul Hamilton (Hull Number 227) was a Liberty ship built in the United States during World War II. She was named after Paul Hamilton, the third United States Secretary of the Navy.

 

On her fifth voyage the SS Paul Hamilton left Hampton Roads, Virginia on 2 April 1944 as part of convoy UGS 38, carrying supplies and the ground personnel of the 485th Bombardment Group of the United States Army Air Forces to Italy. On the evening of 20 April it was attacked 30 miles (48 km) in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Cape Bengut near Algiers by 23 German Ju 88 bombers of III./Kampfgeschwader 26, I. and III./Kampfgeschwader 77. One aerial torpedo struck the Paul Hamilton and detonated the cargo of high explosives and bombs, and the ship and crew disappeared within 30 seconds. The crew and passengers, who included 154 officers and men of the 831st Bombardment Squadron, were all lost. Of the 580 men aboard only one body was recovered.

Sidney was KIA/MIA in the fights by entering the city (Battle off Metz, France) on Nov. 5, 1944, he is honored with a Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Marksman Ship Badge, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.
