At 09.32 hours on 20 Sep 1943, U-238 fired four torpedoes at convoy ON-202 about 500 miles southwest of Iceland and reported two hits on the ships in station #11 and #21. The Frederick Douglass in station #11 was damaged and the Theodore Dwight Weld in station #21 was sunk.

The Theodore Dwight Weld (Master Michael Fromanack) was hit on the port side in the settling tanks opposite the #3 hold. Only a few seconds later the boilers blew up and broke the ship in two just forward of the bridge. The stern sank almost immediately so that the master, seven officers, 34 crewmen and 28 armed guards (the ship was armed with one 3in and nine 20mm guns) on board had no time to launch any lifeboats or rafts. The most survivors were washed off the stern or jumped overboard from the bow and clung to three doughnut rafts that floated free until they were picked up by the British rescue ship Rathlin, one armed guard was taken off the bow section by its motor rescue boat. Two officers, 21 crewmen and 15 armed guards were rescued by the rescue ship and landed in Halifax on 28 September, but one crewman died onboard and was buried at sea.

Circumstances Of Loss

Private Roscoe “Ross” Albaugh was assigned to the Naval Operating Base, Iceland, as his first duty station after boot camp. He boarded the USS Henry R. Mallory, an ocean liner turned transport, at New York City on 23 January 1943. Mallory carried 494 passengers and crew, plus a cargo of food, clothing, cigarettes, mail, and vehicles bound for Reykjavik. Although capable of reasonably fast speeds, she was assigned to a slow convoy (SC-118) for the dangerous North Atlantic crossing.

At 0659 on 7 February 1943, a single torpedo fired by U-402 hit the Mallory’s #3 hold where the Marines were quartered. An untold number died in the initial explosion and rapid flooding; others managed to scramble topside. Only three of the ship’s ten lifeboats cleared the ship – men jumped overboard into fifty-degree water as the Mallory settled by the stern and slipped from sight.

The Mallory sent no distress calls, fired no rockets, and no order was given to abandon ship. Any rationale for these decisions died with the ship’s master, Captain Horace Weaver. After several hours afloat, the survivors were rescued by Coast Guard Cutters Bibb and Ingham. German U-Boats still haunted the area; the cutters were unable to recover bodies from the sea. Only 222 men survived the sinking – less than half of those aboard.

Roscoe’s body lost at sea. Roscoe H. Albaugh was officially declared dead on 8 February 1944.

The SS Meriwether Lewis left New York on February 7, 1943, loaded with ammunition and tires. It was Messman Walter F. Meisner’s first voyage. The Liberty Ship joined Convoy HX-227 on February 18. The convoy consisted of seventy ships plus destroyer escorts bound for the United Kingdom.

While about 210 miles south of Iceland in the North Atlantic, on March 2, 1943, the SS Meriwether Lewis fell back from the main body of the convoy. She was promptly attacked by German submarine U-759, commanded by Kapitänleutnant Rudolf Friedrich.

The attack was unsuccessful and the U-boat was forced to retire due to mechanical difficulties. However, the straggling freighter was in a vulnerable position and the wolves were closing in. German submarine U-634, commanded by Oberleutnant zur See Hans-Günther Brosin, was summoned to the scene.

The ship was disabled by one of four torpedoes fired at 06:43 hours. Two more torpedoes, one at 07:52 hours and another at 09:05 hours finished off the doomed Liberty Ship. The second torpedo caused a massive detonation in the cargo hold when the ammunition ignited.

The ship broke in two and sank bow first. The crew aboard the SS Meriwether Lewis included forty-four merchant sailors and a twenty-five man Naval Armed Guard. Despite a two-day search by Coast Guard Cutter Ingham (WPG-35), no survivors were found. Only a thirty mile long trail of automobile tires was sighted.
