“Bankjes schilderen lukt prima vanuit een rolstoel”

 

Een beperking hoeft geen belemmering te zijn om mee te doen aan ’t Heerlens Heitje. Jean-Louis Vijgen is daarvan het levende bewijs. Hoewel hij gekluisterd is aan een rolstoel, heeft hij al flink wat klusjes uitgevoerd. Zelf zegt hij daarover: “Ik klus graag én ik verdien zo een extraatje, dus waarom zou ik het niet doen?”

 

Jean-Louis Vijgen heeft sinds 11 Jaar een progressieve vorm van MS, waardoor zijn spierfuncties steeds slechter worden. Sinds 4 Maanden zit hij in een rolstoel. “Maar ik ben echt niet gehandicapt, het leven gaat gewoon door”, luidt zijn devies. Niet voor niets heeft hij een tattoo op zijn arm met de tekst ‘Refuse to sink’. “Ik ben graag actief bezig, ik heb echt geen zin om binnen te zitten. Toen ik hoorde van ’t Heerlens Heitje, heb ik me meteen aangemeld. Ik leef van een uitkering en de Heitjes geven me toch de mogelijkheid om leuke dingen te doen. De verdiende Heitjes geef ik vaak uit bij Max Wijn, maar ik koop ook wel eens knutselspulletjes voor mijn kleinkinderen bij Welpie Toys.”

 

Bankjes schilderen

Inmiddels staat de teller op 32 klussen. Daarmee heeft hij al meer dan 800 Heitjes ofwel € 800 verdiend. Meestal kiest hij ervoor om bankjes te schilderen in het centrum van Heerlen. Jean-Louis: “Ik heb geen auto, dus ik kies voor klussen in mijn eigen omgeving. En bankjes zijn voor mij het makkelijkste, daar kom ik vanuit mijn rolstoel goed aan. Al had ik wel wat moeite met het bankje op het Hesselleplein. Die ligt niet direct aan een pad, waardoor ik er met de rolstoel niet bij kon komen. Uiteindelijk ben ik er maar naartoe gekropen. Dat was heel onhandig, maar het is toch gelukt. Daar ben ik best wel trots op. Ik heb ook wel eens een afvalbak geschilderd. Maar dat is erg bewerkelijk, omdat je de grijze paal waar de afvalbak aan vasthangt niet mag mee schilderen. Je moet dus veel afplakken. Kortom, veel werk terwijl het maar 15 Heitjes oplevert.”

 

Niet voor de gezelligheid

Behoefte aan andere, makkelijkere klussen heeft Jean-Louis eigenlijk niet. “Het aanbod vind ik prima. Ik vind het wel jammer dat je maar € 125 per maand mag verdienen (zie hoofdstuk Inwoners, red.). Het liefst zou ik nog veel meer willen klussen. Mensen maken soms ook een praatje met me. Laatst kreeg ik een complimentje omdat ik aan het klussen was vanuit de rolstoel. En iemand heeft me ook al eens een kop koffie aangeboden. Maar eerlijk is eerlijk, ik doe het niet voor de gezelligheid. Actief bezig zijn en wat bijverdienen, daar gaat het om. En blijkbaar ben ik niet de enige, want ik zie steeds vaker ook andere mensen klussen. Aan de ene kant vind ik dat leuk, maar ja, het is ook concurrentie hè? Zo blijven er minder klussen voor mij over!” 😊
