Philip was KIA when the ship sunk in the Battle of Savo Island (known as the Ironbottom Sound), on Aug. 9, 1942, he is honored with a  Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

 

Philip is buried/mentioned at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial  Manila, Metro Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines.
