Earl was KIA when the ship was  hit by a Bomb and Torpedo from a Japanese Nakajima B5N (torpedo bomber) and Sunk during the Battle of Santa Cruz on Oct. 26, 1942, Seaman First Class Earl A. Abbott is honored with a  Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

 

Earl is buried/mentioned at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial  Manila, Metro Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines.
